New Horizons: Embracing Change and Cherishing Traditions This Holiday Season

As the holiday season envelops us in its familiar warmth, I find myself reflecting on the journey I've shared with you through this blog series. It's been a path of self-discovery, healing, and growth. Now, as we approach the end of the year in our new home, having left Colorado behind, I'm filled with a sense of accomplishment and anticipation for what lies ahead.

The holidays often stir a complex cocktail of emotions, especially when family dynamics and major life changes are involved. For many of us who've navigated the choppy waters of narcissistic family systems, this time of year can be particularly challenging. But as I've learned through my journey, it's also an opportunity for renewal and the appreciation of meaningful traditions, wherever we find ourselves.

Our Christmas Eve tradition has always been a cherished part of our holiday celebration. Julie, the kids, and I would gather for a cozy evening of hot cocoa and Christmas episodes of our favorite shows. The excitement would build as we shared presents among each other, all while preparing for the big day ahead. These moments of togetherness and joy have been the cornerstone of our holiday experience.

This year brings significant change. With our recent move and our kids growing older, our usual traditions are in flux. It's a bittersweet feeling, acknowledging that we're in a period of transition. Yet, it also reminds us of the importance of adapting and creating new memories in our new surroundings.

One tradition we've enjoyed in recent years is our home-raised turkeys for our holiday meals. While this specific tradition might not continue in our new home, it represents our values of self-sufficiency and mindful living – principles we're excited to adapt to our new environment.

As we celebrate this holiday season in our new home, I'm struck by how this move represents more than just a change of address. It's a fresh start, an opportunity to build a life that fully aligns with our values and aspirations. The process was daunting, but it's filled me with excitement. It feels like the culmination of the personal growth work I've been doing and a chance to create an environment where our family can thrive.

In the midst of this significant change, we're mindful of balancing the new with the familiar. We've brought with us the holiday traditions that bring us joy and left behind those that no longer serve us. It's a liberating feeling to realize that we have the power to shape our holiday experience, to keep what's meaningful and let go of what isn't, even in a new place.

This year, I'm particularly focused on being present and mindful during our celebrations. It's easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of settling into a new home, but I'm making a conscious effort to slow down and truly appreciate these moments with Julie and the kids. Whether it's exploring our new community's holiday offerings or reimagining our traditions in our new space, these are the memories I want to create and cherish.

As I navigate this season of change, I'm also mindful of the importance of maintaining healthy boundaries. I hold no anger or resentment towards my family-of-origin or my extended family. I've learned the value of prioritizing my well-being and that of my immediate family while still extending compassion to all. It's a delicate balance, but one that's crucial for maintaining peace and fostering genuine connections, especially from our new home base.

Looking ahead to the new year, I'm filled with hope and excitement. Our move symbolizes a new chapter, full of possibilities. I'm eager to see how our family will continue to grow and thrive in our new environment, and how we'll build a life filled with authenticity, joy, and meaningful connections.

It's okay to prioritize joy and genuine connection. You have the power to create holiday experiences that truly resonate with your values and bring you peace.
